Prints and Patterns

Seamless prints created from a text prompt and optional reference images

1

Select Tool

If not already selected, choose Prints and Patterns from the model selection dropdown at the top of the Create module.

2

Choose “Generate Seamless Print”

The default option is “Generate Seamless Print” which will allow you to create seamless, repeatable prints from a prompt and optional reference images.

“Recolor” is used to change the colors of a reference image of a print based on the prompt. When using this option, you’ll upload a print and describe it in your prompt along with the colors you would like to use. This will not generate a seamless print.

3

Write a Prompt

TIP

Clarity and Precision

Describe the print you want to see in detail.
Add in colors and be specific. Example: Rather than neutral use the word beige.
Call out direction of stripe. Example: vertical stripe
Most animal prints are actually animal skin or animal fur. Be sure to note which one you want! Example: “cow print” versus “cowhide print”

Tone

For the best results, your prompt should include the mood or vibe you’re aiming for. Using adjectives such as “elegant”, “chaotic”, or “dainty” can help the platform create more interesting outputs that showcase various styles.
Aim for a poetic tone with your prompts that explains the mood or vibe you are aiming for.
Avoid command words such as “add”, “create”, “transform”, “change”.
Be repetitive! Use repetition to reinforce details that may be missed.

Describe the Print

We recommend prompts at least 5 words long. Describe exactly what you would like to see.

Prompt Examples

Format 1: Simple
Color
Motif or Animal
You can try a simple prompt for your first generation and review the outputs before adding more detail. This is great for prints that do not need a mood such as stripes, plaids, dots, or simple animal skin prints.
Brown, beige, and black leopard print.
Pastel blue and pastel peach vertical stripe print.
Navy dot on a white ground.
Format 2: complex
Mood
Color
Movement
Motif
Start with describing the overall mood to emphasize the desired vibe of the print. Then add colors and motif.
An elegant and sophisticated painterly floral print with flowing blush pink roses, cream and dusty mauve dahlias. There are subtle sage green and muted gold accents.
A dynamic, energetic abstract print in shades of blue and white with fluid brush splatters and irregular shapes.
A vibrant and modern ikat print, in hot pink, turquoise, yellow, white. The print features repeating diamond and chevron ikat motifs. The print blends an artisanal, hand-dyed feel with an energetic palette.

Add a Reference Image

Optional

Adding reference images is optional. When adding your reference image, you’ll choose “Style Inspiration” or “Seamless Converter”.

Uploading a reference image

Style Inspiration

Adding reference images is optional. When adding your reference image, you’ll choose “Style Inspiration” or “Seamless Converter”.

1
Find a print similar to your desired output and use it to inspire brand new prints without simple duplication. This is great for when you have a scan of a similar print that is not perfectly flat.
2
Create a simple color palette and upload. The outputs will loosely follow the colors in the palette and fit into a set color story.
3
Choose an image to transfer the style to your outputs. This could be a photograph or painting. See below how the style and colors of the reference image are transferred to the output, without duplication. Different references create outputs with a very different feel.

You can add up to three images and adjust how much each image influences the output using the weight sliders below.

TIP

When prompting yarn-dye patterns (example: stripes, gingham, plaid) it is recommended to use similar patterns as a reference image.

Seamless Converter

This choice is useful when you have a flat reference image of a print without a repeat. The Seamless converter will very closely follow the supplied reference image, and create a seamless repeatable print or texture by adding similar motifs and designs.

TIP

We suggest not to use a printed garment on a body because the silhouette will also be pulled in. You want to use a flat image cropped so only the print or texture is showing.

The similarity slider should be set quite high, 70% or above to create a seamless print similar to the reference image.

5

Advanced: Use Limited Color Palette

Optional

Checking this box with limit the generated print to only 12 colors. This may degrade the quality of the output of complex prints, such as florals or paisleys.

This example uses the same prompt “A cascade of watercolor peonies” and features a limited number of colors in the palette.
